Caritas Village is the first phase in the response to the desperate crisis created by the January 2010 Haiti Earthquake, which left hundreds of thousands dead or injured, displaced over a million people, and destroyed the infrastructure of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area.
In response to the desperate situation in Haiti, Caritas Village will be the first “model village” to serve in the rebuilding of Haiti. CiVI’s strategy is to work in close collaboration with the Missionaries of St Charles Borromeo (the “Scalabrini Fathers”) who have been serving in Haiti for several decades, and to build small self sufficient communities in the Croix-des-Bouquets neighborhood of Port-au-Prince where the Scalabrini already have a foundation, grade school and high school, medical clinic, and social services.
The goal of Caritas Village is to be self supporting and sustainable in regards to community organization, water, energy, food production, commerce, waste and sanitation, and building materials.
As a model community, Caritas Village will serve the needs of the residents and the local population, to develop into a center for commerce and business development in the rebuilding of Haiti, and is intended to be replicated across the country to provide adequate housing and communal life for the hundreds of thousands of displaced persons.
Liturgical Environs, PC is designing a conceptual master plan for a sustainable community.
