Berkeley, California (2004 – 2005) (visit)
in association with Form4 Architects, San Francisco CA
The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology is among the oldest institutions of higher education in California — first founded in 1851 as the House of Studies for the Western Dominican Province and later civilly incorporated as the College of St. Albert the Great. After the establishment of the Graduate Theological Union, the college changed its name to the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, moving to the GTU campus on “Holy Hill”, north of the UC Berkeley campus. Since then it has been in rented accommodations, but under the leadership of the new president, Fr. Michael Sweeney OP, the college decided to find a permanent home.
The college purchased the campus of a Berkeley synagogue a few blocks away, and asked Steven Schloeder — a recent alumnus of the GTU who studied closely with the Dominicans at Berkeley — to help in the planning and design process. Steven brought in the talented team of Form4 Architects from San Francisco to collaborate in crafting a new home for the academic community.
